I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your mam, I can only imagine how difficult it must be to process everything that’s happened. Thank you for reaching out and sharing your experience here, it takes real courage to reach out and talk about it.
Infections, including sepsis, can sadly be a serious complication after a stem cell transplant, especially in the early days when the immune system is very weak. Central lines such as Hickman lines are essential for treatment, but they can also increase the risk of infection despite the best possible care and precautions. It’s completely understandable that you have questions about how this could have happened.
It may be helpful to contact your mam’s transplant team to discuss her care in more detail. They would be best placed to explain what happened in her specific case and answer any medical questions you may have.
If you’d like to talk things through or get some support from us directly, you’re very welcome to get in touch. You can email us at: patientinfo@anthonynolan.org or call: 0303 303 0303 and select option 3. One of our helpline team will be here to listen and help in any way we can.
